LAPOROSCOPIC APPENDECTOMY

LAPAROSCOPIC APPENDECTOMY
Why would I need my appendix removed?

Acute appendicitis
This is a condition where the appendix, which is a worm-like structure protruding from the cecum (part of the colon), becomes inflamed and causes right lower abdominal pain, fever, and nausea and vomiting. Most of the time this is a condition recognized in the emergency department and requires prompt treatment to avoid complications such as a ruptured appendix or an abscess.

Chronic appendicitis
A small percentage of people will develop a low-grade dull pain in the right lower quadrant and it could be a sign of chronic appendicitis.

What to expect?
Both conditions are treated with laparoscopic appendectomy as an outpatient. An emergency appendectomy may require a longer hospital stay.
