LAPAROSCOPIC VENTRAL

AND HERNIA REPAIR

What is a ventral hernia?

A ventral hernia is also known as a hernia of the anterior abdominal wall or an umbilical hernia. A ventral hernia is a bulge of tissues through an opening within your abdominal wall muscles.

Is it dangerous?

If the tissues that have herniated cannot be “pushed back in” to the abdominal cavity, this is known as an incarcerated hernia, which can lead to a loss of blood supply to the tissues, known as a strangulated hernia. Strangulated hernias are a life-threatening condition and need to be treated emergently.

It is difficult to determine who will have an incarcerated or strangulated hernia, thus it is advisable to seek surgical consultation for your hernia to determine if it needs to be fixed. Dr. Chaudhry will take a thorough history and physical exam to determine if and when your hernia needs to be fixed.

How is the ventral hernia fixed?

At Chaudhry Bariatric, Dr. Chaudhry employs the latest laparoscopic surgical techniques to fix your hernia and speed recovery. He utilizes a two-incision approach to decrease post-operative pain.

Recovery

The surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure and you should expect to go back to work within a week. Main restriction after surgery is to avoid lifting anything greater than 10 pounds for 3-4 weeks to decrease chance of hernia recurrence. Dr. Chaudhry will follow up with you 2-3 weeks after your procedure.

What is an inguinal hernia?

An inguinal hernia is when tissues bulge through a weakness in the abdominal muscles around your inguinal canal, also known as a groin hernia. Someone may recall an incident of heavy lifting or moving something that led to a “popping” sensation or sound, although many do not experience an inciting event.

Is it dangerous?

If left untreated, an inguinal hernia will continue to enlarge and can lead to strangulation of tissues (including strangulation of intestines).

How is an inguinal hernia fixed?

Dr. Chaudhry is well-trained in both laparoscopic and open approaches for inguinal hernia repairs. He will determine the best approach based on the size and location of your inguinal hernia. Some people have bilateral hernias (hernias on both right and left sides). Dr. Chaudhry highly recommends the laparoscopic approach for bilateral hernias given the minimal incisions needed to repair both sides.

Recovery

The surgery is done as an outpatient procedure. You should be able to return to work within a week with the main restriction of not lifting anything heavier than 10 pounds for 3-4 weeks after surgery. Dr. Chaudhry will follow up with you 2-3 weeks after your procedure.

WHAT OUR PATIENTS ARE SAYING

AHS_Website_Testimonials_2018_01-3 (1).j

"I had surgery on July 11th, 2016 by Dr. Chaudhry. I have lost 120.5 pounds. I knew I needed to take control of my life. I fretted over making the first appointment to see Dr. Chaudhry. He was amazing. He was very detailed in explaining my options and truly made me feel comfortable.

For once a doctor was supportive of helping me be successful, not judging me as if I had made bad life choices. He recommended the Gastric Sleeve. I wish I would have had surgery sooner. I feel better than I did in my twenties. I had let life get the best of me.

Food had become my comfort and then my excuse. When I saw Dr. Chaudhry I weighed 274 pounds. I am now 154 pounds almost 10 months post op. I am off all of my other medications other than an occasional headache. I am enjoying things that I either physically couldn’t do or I was embarrassed.

My outside now matches my inside. I am proud of who I am. I am proud of what I have become. I appreciate what Dr. Chaudhry has done for me."
